*** This is my personal opinion and should not be taken in any other way...I am a pretty big fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's books. In particular, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
I've counted them among my favourite books for many years. When they came out with the Lord of the Rings movies, I was quite impressed with how true to the books they kept them. Granted there were a few changes and omissions... But, overall I thought they did a pretty good job keeping the moviess very similar to the books.
But the Hobbit movies were VERY disappointing. If you didn't know that they were based on a book... The movies would have been okay. However, after reading the book (several times) in the past. I was very disappointed with the movies. In particular the third and final movie.
As far as movies go, they were ok. Not even close to "good". But they are not even in the same category as the books.
I used to like Peter Jackson's movies. But after seeing his version of the Hobbit, I'll likely be waiting until his next movie comes out on DVD.
Don't get me wrong, the graphics and effects were quite well done. But his alteration of the original story and characters was quite disappointing. However, as I said above, I am no movie critic and this is only my personal opinion. And after all... For him, it's likely about the money and not the quality of the product.
