I have been having trouble with my computer lately. It's been freezing up and running slowly. Windows has been crashing and hanging. I was having trouble copying files from my C: drive. I was seeing cryptic error messages and had to re-format and re-install Windows several times in the past few days.
Normally I would have enjoyed this "challenge". But, with my current medical situation: Lack of mental focus, memory loss and vision problems that make reading very difficult; among other things, It was not a good experience. However, on the bright side. It was extremely good excersise for my brain.
After many hours of trouble shooting the "symtoms", I was finally able to narrow it down to an issue with my hard drive. Then, suddenly and for the first time during this ordeal; Windows gave me an error message that was actually useful: "Cyclical Redundancy Check failure". I did a quick google search and discovered that a good 'ol DOS command would likely solve my problems... "CHKDSK C: /f /r". An old DOS command I hadn't used in years...
Basically, it checks the hard disk for errors, fixes the errors and re-copies any damaged files. The process itself takes a few hours. But, as I mentioned, the diagnostic process involved to find the answer was not easy.

My good 'ol self" would have figured this out much faster. But, I must adnit, I am quite glad to know that I can still do it. Even if it takes me a lot longer than it should.
